Computerized Tomography (CT or "CAT" scan)

CT

Vancouver Radiologists, P.C., a regional leader in providing medical imaging services, is pleased to offer the most versatile Computed Tomography system in Clark County. Capable of obtaining up to 16 high resolution images per second, the new scanner is perfect for advanced applications such as CT angiography, CT pulmonary angiography, tumor imaging, orthopedic exams (in the presence of metallic hardware), and urologic exams including CT urography. This means exceptional CT quality, maximum patient comfort, and parameters toward earlier detection and more accurate diagnosis.

What is Computerized Tomography?

Computerized Tomography (CT or "CAT" scan) is a safe, painless, and quick procedure used to obtain detailed images of the inside of the body.

The CT scanner resembles a giant doughnut. As the body passes through the "hole" of the doughnut, the scanner takes specialized X-ray images of the body which are then processed by computers to generate and display detailed cross sectional pictures. The results of the CT exam as interpreted by a radiologist (a doctor specially trained in interpreting X-rays) can often assist your physician in making an accurate diagnosis.

Our CT is a state-of-the-art multi-slice spiral CT scanner manufactured by GE Medical Systems which produces superior quality CT images.

Preparing for a CT scan

  • Inform us of any medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and kidney disease.
  • If a patient has had any allergic reaction to X-ray dye (a contrast medium), or has severe allergies, the patient's physician and Vancouver Radiologists' staff should be notified at the time of scheduling.
  • We typically recommend that a patient does not eat 4 hours before the procedure if a CT of the abdomen or pelvis is scheduled, except for medications. The patient may drink clear liquids (water, fruit juice without pulp, carbonated beverages and black tea or coffee) until 2 hours prior to the exam.
  • For CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis, the patient may be instructed to drink 2 or more 16-ounce glasses of contrast medium which will highlight the digestive tract on the CT images. Patients who are allergic to intravenous (IV) dye can still drink the liquid contrast without problem.
  • To be as comfortable as possible during the CT scan, two-piece, loose-fitting clothing should be worn. The patient may be asked to wear scrubs in place of clothing.
  • If a patient is pregnant or thinks she may be, the patient should notify their physician and our staff before a CT scan.

During a CT scan

A CT technologist will be available to explain and answer questions before, during, and after a scan.

The patient will lie on a cushioned table that passes through the CT scanner. Depending on the type of CT procedure, the patient may receive an intravenous (IV) injection of contrast medium (X-ray dye) that improves the clarity of scanned images. Vancouver Radiologists uses only the safest type of IV contrast medium available. A CT technologist will monitor the progress of the patient's CT scan.

An entire CT exam typically takes approximately 10-20 minutes (actual scanning time is often less than 1 minute). Some examinations could take longer.

After a CT scan

Once scanning is complete, the patient can eat and resume normal activity. Fluid in encouraged. Any contrast material given during the procedure will pass naturally through the patient's body, usually within one day.

A Radiologist will interpret the patient's CT scan and send a report to the patient's primary physician. The primary physician will discuss the CT results with the patient.
